A very common question that can be seen on the many different Facebook pages for Isla is “Where’s the best sushi?”
The island is blessed with several very good options and since I’m also a big sushi fan, I “sacrificed” (lol) myself to do a taste test of the top three you’ll hear most people recommend. As new offerings become available, I’ll do my best to update this short blog regarding Isla sushi offerings 🍣.
The number one question you need to ask is, do you want to travel for sushi? Luckily the 3 places in this blog are all in different areas and give the island really good coverage.
Asia Caribe - Centro
Sushi Limón - Caribbean side, mid island
Samura - Bay side, south island
Using Google Maps (type in the name and Isla Mujeres) you can easily see their locations.
Second question, are you going for sushi with a group of people and not everyone prefers sushi/Japanese food? Then Asia Caribe is your place. They have limited nigiri options and have a huge variety of rolls in addition to Mexican/Thai/Chinese/Asian fusion. Say hi to Lory, their awesome bartender!

Are you going only for sushi and you want the highest quality and variety of nigiri/sashimi? IMHO it’s Sushi Limón. Their O-toro and salmon belly is as good as what I’ve had in Japan. It’s the real deal. They also have cooked Japanese dishes. Check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083060930586&mibextid=LQQJ4d
Do you have a hipster (I mean this in a good, fun way) sushi crowd? Then you’ll love Samura. They have an amazing outdoor lounge vibe with a live chill DJ. Their ambience is incredible and worth a visit! As you’d expect, they have fun, creative cocktails based on sake and whiskey (popular in the cool sushi locations around the world). They have good sushi and a variety of cooked Japanese dishes too. Check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/SamuraIslaMujeres?mibextid=LQQJ4d
In an attempt to keep things fair, I tried to order the same items at each location. Only Sushi Limón offered Fatty Tuna & Salmon belly nigiri and I’ve found (over many trips) that all their nigiri is top notch. The Chu Toro and Salmon nigiri at Samura were decent but their Chu-Toro was, in fact, simply regular tuna (at the time I tried it). The salmon and tuna nigiri at Asia Caribe were on par with Samura.
All of these 3 restaurants are very solid sushi options, it’s mostly a matter of what you & your group are looking for and your preference for traveling.
Also worth noting - Samura, Asia Caribe & Sushi Limon all accept credit cards (unless there's an outage/tech issue which sometimes happens).
I hope this sushi blog has been helpful, my belly was happy to do the research. 🫶🏼😅
