Looking for a rental? Unusual questions to ask...

When looking for a rental you are going to check for the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, is there a pool, etc. However - renting in Isla Mujeres comes with some unique aspects that you might want to consider during your search, here are a few:

Water supply

At the time that I’m writing this post the entire island of Isla Mujeres is without tap water due to a leak in the water pipe that brings water from the mainland to the island. Usually Centro gets water back first whenever there is an outage (which is not unusual), short disruptions often go unnoticed as many properties have small water tanks on the roof top.

Casa Reposado has an additional water cistern underground that holds 10,000 liters (over 2,600 gallons) of constantly refreshed tap water, enough for over 1,600 toilet flushes (or filling over 86 bath tubs).

Power

Power outages are another fairly common occurrence on the island, especially outside of Centro. Sometimes it’s due to a storm, sometimes somebody crashes into a pole and almost the entire island goes dark. During a power outage the water supply can also be impacted as the water pumps need electricity, too. This means that you won’t have air conditioning, or lights, or Wifi - and potentially no water to flush toilets, or take a shower.

Casa Reposado has a dedicated generator to ensure your comfort and safety during an outage.

Air Conditioning in ALL living spaces

Air conditioning is a must have for visitors to Isla Mujeres, unless you are used to a tropical climate. Many places only have air conditioning in certain rooms (like a bedroom), however true luxury is to have air conditioning in all rooms, including the bathrooms. You may wonder if that’s necessary, but I will just say that a cold bathroom can save the day (especially when you are not used to certain local dishes). Enough said.

Casa Reposado provides dedicated air conditioning units in all living spaces, including all bathrooms.

Location, location, location

The ideal location of course depends on your personal preference and those of your co-travelers. Many properties will be in the south part of the island, which is great for quiet retreats. That said - staying closer to the north part of the island and the Centro (downtown) area will bring you closer to the best beaches and a wide selection of top-rated restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

Casa Reposado is situated at the edge of Centro, which means that you can get to everything Centro has to offer (including Playa Centro and world-famous Playa Norte) within walking distance, but without the noise sometimes associated with the core of Centro. The ferry terminal is also located within easy walking distance, making arrival and departure that much easier, no waiting in the taxi line or worrying about not getting a taxi to/from downtown or beaches.

Pool(s)

Many places will advertise a pool, but often the pools found at vacation properties on Isla are very shallow and often not heated.

Casa Reposado has two heated pools - a sheltered oceanfront pool on the ground floor (ideal for rainy days or when you need some shade) and a two-level infinity edge oceanfront rooftop pool. Both pools are at least 4.5ft (1.37m) deep, so you can fully immerse yourself in water. The rooftop pool also offers a shallow level for easy lounging. Please note that we don’t recommend either pool for children unless closely supervised at all times.

Rooftop

Rooftops come in many varieties. Some are very basic flat roofs with no shade, some have seating areas, some have a pool. Some are easy to access, some not so much.

Casa Reposado offers a rooftop terrace that is easily accessed by regular enclosed stairs, with views over both the Caribbean and the bay towards Cancun, an infinity edge pool, an enclosed and air-conditioned bathroom, an outdoor shower, a bar, a dining table seating 10 people, and a comfortable lounge and napping area. You can spend the whole day up here and never leave.

Drinking water

It’s Mexico, so seasoned travelers (and many locals) will advise you not to drink the tap water. Most vacation rentals will provide drinking water in watercooler-type dispensers, but often only on one floor or in one room of the property.

Casa Reposado has drinking water dispensers on all floors for your convenience, plus special filters for the kitchen faucets for additional comfort.

Wifi/Internet

Spotty Wifi networks and slow internet can ruin your vacation if you want to stream movies or need to be in that one really important video conference call for work.

Casa Reposado provides a dedicated internet connection via Starlink, which uses low-earth orbit satellites to provide fast internet suitable for streaming and high-quality video conference calls. To ensure strong connectivity throughout the building we leverage a dedicated mesh network that reaches all areas - including the rooftop.
